Scripture – Observation – Application – Prayer

Scripture:

You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. (‭Matthew‬ ‭5‬:‭14-16‬ NLT)

Observation:

I sang “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine” for years as a child and even with my children without really thinking about how this passage says on how my light shines or what it shining does. It is our good deeds that shine. We are to do them openly and not in secret. The end result is that everyone who sees this will praise our heavenly father.

Application:

You may think it is more humble to do good things in private. There are things that this is true about such as giving offerings, etc. However, we are to love our lives openly doing right things. People notice when you do not curse when you hit your thumb with a hammer, or go into a rage over bad things that happen, or go out of your way to help someone when there is no gain for yourself. If we in turn are also acknowledging Christ in our lifestyle and are a part of a local church, others identify us as Christians and will give the glory to God. This is testifying with our walk.

Prayer:

Father, let me live my life in such a way that it brings praise to you. Let me acknowledge you in all my ways and my words. Help me keep my actions from being in conflict with my confession of you as Lord so that others will praise you.
