Cussing Cowboy

The rancher had picked up this cowboy pastor to go work a round up for him. As they rode in the pickup, the rancher would cuss and then apologize to the preacher.

The pastor told him, “I have a cure for that, but it will make you swell up for about three days.

The rancher asked what it was.

James 1:26” was the pastor's reply.

The next day, after the rancher again apologized for cussing, the pastor asked if he had read James 1:26 and the rancher said, “not yet.”

The next day the rancher was madder than a hornet when he picked the pastor up. He looked at the pastor and asked, “Do you know what that scripture said?

The pastor told him, “I told you that it would make you swell up!

Folks, it will cure cussing if you get hold of what it says…

If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless. —James 1:26

Story told by Danny Williams, pastor of Lighthouse Assembly of God in Snyder, TX.

——————————————————————————

If anyone thinks himself to be religious (piously observant of the external duties of his faith) and does not bridle his tongue but deludes his own heart, this person’s religious service is worthless (futile, barren).
–James 1:26 Amplified Bible

——————————————————————————

If any man among you seem to be religious. Pious, or devout. That is, if he does not restrain his tongue, his other evidences of religion are worthless. A man may undoubtedly have many things in his character which seem to be evidences of the existence of religion in his heart, and yet there may be some one thing that shall show that all those evidences are false. Religion is designed to produce an effect on our whole conduct; and if there is any one thing in reference to which it does not bring us under its control, that one thing may show that all other appearances of piety are worthless.” —Albert Barnes
