S.O.A.P. Devotion 2017-10-04

Scripture:

Eight part devotion on this text – Part 4 – Give us this day our daily bread.

“In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.” Matthew‬ ‭6:9-13‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Observation:

“Give us this day our daily bread.”

My third attitude is affected by my need for daily contact with God. This phrase brings to mind how the Israelite people during the exodus from Egypt back to Israel brought with it a great need to feed millions of people in the desert. God provided for them by providing them with their daily bread (manna). But they could only gather enough for the day. Anything spoiled that was kept from the day before. They gathered every day, except for the sabbath. On that day, the day before bread was still good. God wants to provide, but He also wants daily contact.

Application:

God has always made provisions for daily contact like he did for the Israelites. First, I need to get fresh nourishment each day. It is still your Lord’s desire to meet with me each new day with a word for me – a word from His heart for me “this very day.” Second, I don’t run ahead to tomorrow with my worries. God provides all the strength I’ll need for this one day, but only this day. Worry about some future day and I’m on my own! Third, I can count on enough for today. There will always be, as there was for God’s ancient people, “enough for that day.” No more, no less. Enough insight, … money, … energy, … strength. I can only experience God one day at a time to enjoy His presence enjoy each days provision, each sunrise, each meal, each encounter, each witness, each prayer, each sunset… THIS VERY DAY!

Prayer:

Father, let me experience your presence this very day for your mercies are new every morning. Don’t let me get so comfortable in my walk through this life that I do not think I need you every day.
