Scripture – Observation – Application – Prayer

SCRIPTURE:

“”And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6:16-18‬ ‭ESV‬‬

OBSERVATION:

Jesus followed his model of how to pray with instruction on how to fast. One could say that He uses fasting as an example of religious activity in general. The religious hypocrites of the day would make the things they did for God in a very showy way so others could see how spiritual they were. He said that it does not matter what others think since they are not the one that will answer you prayers. Do these things privately because God sees in those private times and He is the one that answers your prayers.

APPLICATION:

Rather than doing these things as a way to draw attention to how spiritual you are, let them be between you and God. Don’t use God as an excuse to make yourself look more holy by taking work time to pray or preach. Don’t brag on your fasting when you fast or the other things that are just time spent with God. You do not have to lie about fasting when you do, just avoid drawing attention to it. Keep it between you and God and He will reward you.

PRAYER:

Father, let me live my life in a way that does not seek glory for myself. Let all the glory be for you. Your best reward is your presence, so, don’t let me neglect my private time with you, for that is when you speak to me and guide me.
