Scripture – Observation – Application – Prayer

SCRIPTURE:

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6:19-21‬ ‭ESV‬‬

OBSERVATION:

To “lay up … treasures” here speaks of someone whose heart is consumed with a need for an over abundance kept for show or ego. More than necessary garments (the Hebrew or an mideastern wealthy would make a great display through the clothes that they wore) and more than the things that they needed that were selfishly hoarded rather than used. In due time, the moths would destroy their apparel, thieves would steal their silver and gold, and rust would destroy their things; thus with time all their treasure would waste away. The thought is that where your heart is, what you dwell on, what you work to preserve is really where your heart is.

APPLICATION:

The things that we really treasure in our hearts should be the things that are lasting. It is not bad to have nice things, but if acquiring those things takes precedence over eternal things we will lose proper focus. Examples: A good name in the sight of God and man is more valuable than wealth. A Godly example for your children is a better inheritance than temporary wealth. Focus on pleasing God and on the things that produce a godly legacy more than those things that provide a temporary satisfaction. To do that, you have to have your heart changed toward Him.

PRAYER:

Father, don’t let my focus on the right things be a temporary exercise of my mind. Change my heart, oh God, so that what I treasure are the things that you find pleasing and leave a legacy of godliness that others can follow.
