Scripture – Observation – Application – Prayer

Scripture:

Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realizing it! (Hebrews 13:2 NLT)

Observation:

The “some” here speaks of Abraham and Lot who were hospitable to angels without realizing it and were blessed for doing it. The apostle encouraged the disciples to show hospitality to strangers, even as Abraham and Lot had done for these angels.

Application:

Today travelers do not depend on locals for lodging and provisions as they did when this text was written. We have hotels and gas stations to help them on their way. So how does this apply to us. This passage was not referring to beggars and transients who prey on the unsuspecting, so that was not where it would apply. We can apply it to strangers that come into our churches, our work place, and even our neighborhood. Hospitality is defined as, “the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers.” In essence, treat them as though you would want to be treated if it were you.

Prayer:

Father, do not let me ignore the guests, visitors, and strangers that come into my life. Instead remind me to treat them as I would want to be treated if I were in their shoes. And, Lord, help me to not be so busy that I do not take the time to notice they are there.
