Scripture – Observation – Application – Prayer

Scripture:

But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it. (James 1:22-25 NLT)

Observation:

You are fooling yourself if you think you are a Christian and all you do is hear the Word of God and not do it. It is like window shopping, you see it but don't own it, so you can't take it with you. Many think that obeying God's word will limit what they can do, when in reality it sets you free. And even better, if you do what it says and remember it's instruction, God will bless you for doing what you are taught.

Application:

People want to be either part time or casual Christians. They want the benefits of being called a Christian without having to follow Jesus. Yes, we are saved by grace and not by works, but through that process we commit to being Christ followers. A disciple of Christ (a Christian) is not just a student that learns what God is teaching, but because they are saved they also apply those teachings to their lives. Those who are not committed just have things go in one ear and out the other without any change. God's word changes committed people. In reality their are no part time or casual Christians. These are just fooling themselves.

Prayer:

Father, help me to continue to be a doer of your word and not just a hearer only. I have committed to being a disciple and a follower of you and I depend on you to both speak to me and to empower me to follow where you lead. Lead the way Lord, lead the way!
