Scripture – Observation – Application – Prayer

Scripture:

For we were not making up clever stories when we told you about the powerful coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. We saw his majestic splendor with our own eyes when he received honor and glory from God the Father. The voice from the majestic glory of God said to him, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.” We ourselves heard that voice from heaven when we were with him on the holy mountain. (2 Peter 1:16-18 NLT)

Observation:

This message about the powerful coming of our Lord Jesus Christ is not some clever made up story or a myth as some one say. The apostles saw the very glory of God descend around him with their own eyes when the Father showed him honor. On that mountain and on that occasion, they also heard God speak to them about Jesus with their own ears when God said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.”

Application:

One of the most amazing things I have ever seen was when Pastor Tom Lakey of Lubbock did his wife's funeral. He did the graveside service first and had gathered around him a large group of pastors and missionaries. He patted the head of the casket and said something like this, “Gentlemen, this message that we preach is not a myth nor a made up story. It is truth and it is a reality.” And because of the reality he could preach the funeral for the person he loved most in this world knowing she would be waiting for him in eternity. I said the same thing at my father's graveside recently. I did not see Jesus when the glory of God fell on him, but I have seen his handiwork over and over. I have felt his touch and heard his voice. I know that this is real. Take time to look back like Peter did and get hold of the times when God has proven himself to be real to you. And don't let go of that reality or allow anyone to take that away.

Prayer:

Father, I thank you for taking time to reveal yourself to me. It should have been enough that you gave your son to die for my sins and make a way for my salvation. But you never stop reaching out in love to a lost and dying world. You reached out to me and proved that you, your son, and your Holy Spirit are reality. Thank you. Don't ever let me forget.
