Scripture – Observation – Application – Prayer

Scripture:

“God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.” (‭Matthew‬ ‭5‬:‭3‬ NLT)

Observation:

Some debate whether these are those who are actually poor or those who are humble. The gospel was to be preached to the actual poor and not just to the rich. Other preachers had come and talked about how happiness and blessings were demonstrated by wealth, but Jesus let it be known that the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to the poor now. He used a present tense verb “the Kingdom of Heaven IS theirs”. Those who must depend on Him are much more easily aware of His provision now and for the future.

Application:

Our happiness is not based on our full bank account although some think that it would make happiness easier. Our happiness is not based on earthly blessings of riches, but rather on knowing that we are part of the Kingdom already. My joy is in the fact that I already have a king that watches over me and someday I will stand before Him and hear him say, “Well done my good and faithful servant.” You can’t buy that kind of feeling with earthly treasures!

Prayer:

Father, I depend on you in all that I have or do. You alone are my source and I know it. Although I do not have riches and at times seem to squeak by, you are always their to keep me. In that, I am happy and blessed.
