Scripture – Observation – Application – Prayer

Scripture:

God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted. (‭Matthew‬ ‭5‬:‭4‬ NLT)

Observation:

The quick thought would be that this is speaking of those who have lost a love one in death and although we comfort those in those situations, this is not what this passage refers to. This refers to the ones whom the scriptures speak of who “mourn” in Zion “Woe is me! for I am undone.” John the Baptist had preached repentance and so did Jesus. Part of the progress to repentance is a stage of mourning for past sins. But although you hate what you have done in the past, their is comfort in knowing that Christ forgives you.

Application:

I was raised in a Christian home and never really stopped going to church. Don’t misunderstand, I have done wrong, but I have jokingly said that I have sown wild oats, but not enough to grow you a good breakfast. That almost sounds like I treat my sins lightly, but the truth is that sometimes when I think about the sins that I did, I feel an overwhelming grief. I may not have committed as many sins or went deep into an ungodly lifestyle, but my sins are just as grievous because they affected other people and separated me from God. But when those feelings overwhelm me, the Holy Spirit comforts me and reminds me that those sins are forgiven. To receive this comfort, we must lean on our Lord. That is what this scriptures is addressing.

Prayer:

Father, I am so sorry for the sins I have committed. Both those from long ago and those who are more current. They grieve me greatly, but I take comfort in your forgiveness.
