Scripture – Observation – Application – Prayer

Scripture:

God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth. (‭Matthew‬ ‭5‬:‭5‬ NLT)

Observation:

We are more used to seeing this verse in other translations saying “blessed are the meek”. The word used here is one that would denote being “mild” or in an old sense a “gentleman”. This blessing is for those who are not boastful, arrogant or unnecessarily aggressive, but instead conduct themselves with dignity. It does not mean that they are a push over. Jesus called himself meek in Matthew 11:29 and yet he was manly enough to clean out the temple when it had to be done.

Application:

When we are not boastful, arrogant, or unnecessarily aggressive, others will give us favor over those who act in these ways. Nobody likes to be around people who are always pushy and prideful, so they avoid them. In the biker world, people conduct themselves according to what is called “protocol”. What this protocol boils down to is showing respect for one another and it is not just from those low in status toward those of higher status, but both it goes both ways. One of the reason those in higher status are where they are is partly because of their ability to show respect for others. This may not be a perfect example of this passage, but it does demonstrate how Jesus’s words are true both inside and outside the church. A good start for living out this passage is to show respect for those around you in your conduct and your attitudes.

Prayer:

Father, help me to live my life respectfully toward others. Both to those who are above me in authority and to those who may find themselves under my authority. Let me be a gentleman toward others and not full of pride for any gifts you may have given me. I am your servant, nothing more and nothing less.
