Scripture – Observation – Application – Prayer

Scripture:

Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing. (James 1:2-4 NLT)

Observation:

We are encouraged to have a different attitude about difficult times by realizing that even troubles are an opportunity for our endurance to grow. So with joy we endure suffering and when our endurance is fully developed, we will be perfect and complete and in not in need of anything.

Application:

Endurance is the ability or strength to continue or last, especially despite fatigue, stress, or other adverse conditions. When an marathon runner gets into condition to endure, he has to push himself to the limits. Each time he gets stronger, runs farther, and is able to endure more until ultimately he is strong enough to make it through an event and prevail. Our goal as Christians is to endure to the end. Each situation we go through helps to make us stronger and our endurance grows. A runner may be tired at the end of each work out, but he has a certain joy for enduring. So we, too, take joy in each test as we endure unto the end.

Prayer:

Father, I will not lie and say that I look forward to troubles. I much more enjoy times of peace and easy travels. But I do realize that the difficult times I go through prepare me to help others and to be able to stand strong myself. Help me to endure and to count it all joy realizing that you will never put more on me than I am able to bear.
