Scripture – Observation – Application – Prayer

Scripture:

If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless. (James 1:26 NLT)

Observation:

The ability to control the tongue is one of the benefits of becoming a Christian. Those who claim to be Christians, but refuse to control their tongue are fooling themselves and their religious claims are worthless.

Application:

We need to use the ability to control our speech as believers. If we are unable to control it, we should examine our heart to see if we are truly Christ followers. What do we mean by controlling our tongue. Obviously, we should not curse and take the Lord's name in vain, but it would include any unholy speech. Gossip, backbiting, rudeness, crudeness, dirty joking, etc. would also be examples of speech that should be under the control of the believer.

Prayer:

Father, help me to keep a close watch on my speech. Even though cursing has no strong ground in my life, help me to insure that the rest of my speech is becoming for a Christ follower.
