Scripture – Observation – Application – Prayer
Show your faith…
Don’t you remember that our ancestor Abraham was shown to be right with God by his actions when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see, his faith and his actions worked together. His actions made his faith complete. And so it happened just as the Scriptures say: “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith.” He was even called the friend of God. So you see, we are shown to be right with God by what we do, not by faith alone. (James 2:21-24 NLT)
Abraham was shown to be in right standing with God because his faith caused him to obey God. The scriptures say that God counted him righteous because of his faith, but what caused this was that his faith was demonstrated through obedience. Faith and actions work together. Actions without faith are an exercise in futility and there is not true faith without actions. Actions/obedience complete our faith.
The thing that is lacking in faith without actions is trust. Abraham not only believed in God, but he trusted him enough to obey him even when he did not know what was going on. Even when obedience was scary. Abraham added trust to his faith and that allowed him to obey. Then his faith was complete. By application, we need to add trust to out faith to be true believers. (As the Scriptures tell us, “Anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.” – Romans 10:11 NLT) Trust is an essential part of the words that are often translated “believe”. Trusting Christ will enable you to stand up as a believer and to change into a follower of Christ instead of just a fan of Christ.
Father, I trust you. I know who you are and I know that the things you tell me to do are for my own good as well as for the good of the Kingdom. Help me to put any doubts aside if they arise and let me willingly obey your guidance.
