Scripture – Observation – Application – Prayer

Scripture:

Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever. (1 John 2:15-17 NLT)

Observation:

What do you love? If you love the things of this world, then you are not a true believer. Worldly things are more based on a “it is all about me attitude.” Craving for my physical leisure, wanting everything I see, being prideful of my achievements and the possessions that I have. This “me” motivated love of the world is not from the Father but from the natural sin nature of this world we live in. All these things and cravings will pass away, but if our motivation is to please God, then we will live forever.

Application:

Attitude rather than possession is the difference for true believers. Having nice things is not evil, but rather the love for and of them turns what could be good into something that destroys. It leads to coveting, lusting, idolatry, and turning away from God. Make sure that everything in your world is not from an “it is all about me and what I can get” attitude. True believers are motivated to please God instead.

Prayer:

Father, do not let me lose focus on you to the things of this world. Never let the things I have or want to possess me.
