Scripture – Observation – Application – Prayer

Scripture:

And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him. And since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what we ask for. (1 John 5:14, 15 NLT)

Observation:

As believers, we know that God hears our prayers when we ask for anything that please Him. We also know that since he hears us, he will also give to us what we ask for.

Application:

Some misapply this passage by saying that you can ask for anything and God has to give it to you because he said he would. Not exactly. The key to this passage is this phrase, “whenever we ask for anything that pleases him.” We should, since he is living in us, ask for things that please him. When we ask for those things that are within his will, we do know that he will give those things to us. We discover those things by spending time with him, listen to him, and knowing his will for our lives. Then we will desire the right things in the first place.

Prayer:

Father, help me to know you well enough that I know what you desire for me. Let those be the things that I ask for and not every frivolous thing that might pop into my head.
