Scripture – Observation – Application – Prayer
Scripture:
If you see a fellow believer sinning in a way that does not lead to death, you should pray, and God will give that person life. But there is a sin that leads to death, and I am not saying you should pray for those who commit it. All wicked actions are sin, but not every sin leads to death. (1 John 5:16, 17 NLT)
Observation:
We should pray for God to give divine life to any fellow believer that we see sinning in a way that does not lead to death. We are not obligated to pray for a fellow believer who is committing a sin that leads to death. Although all wicked actions are sin, they do not all lead to death.
Application:
Tough verse for anyone to fully understand to the point they can be dogmatic about the meaning of “a sin that leads to death.” Therefore we must rely on the Holy Spirit’s guidance in this area. The good thing is that we are not forbidden to pray for these who have committed such a sin, he only says, “I am not saying you should pray for those”. So a good rule for us could be that we pray for any fellow believer who is sinning unless the Holy Spirit leads you otherwise.
Prayer:
Father, my heart is that every fallen believer repent and be restored no matter what they have done. I need your guidance in so many areas of life, but on this one I have no certainty so make me sensitive to your leading. When in doubt, I will pray for them.
