Scripture – Observation – Application – Prayer
But you, my dear friends, must remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ predicted. They told you that in the last times there would be scoffers whose purpose in life is to satisfy their ungodly desires. These people are the ones who are creating divisions among you. They follow their natural instincts because they do not have God’s Spirit in them. (Jude 1:17-19 NLT)
Instead of listening to false teachers, we need to remember what the Apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ told us would happen in the last days. These who scoff at or mock true doctrine do so because their main purpose in life is to satisfy their own earthly desires. They cause divisions among the believers as they follow their own earthly nature because they do not have the Holy Spirit in them.
Watch a teacher closely and compare what they teach to the word of God and you will see whether their main goal appears to satisfy their own needs or if they are serving God. This is not to say that our preachers cannot have nice things, but you can tell where their priorities are when you see their attitude about things along with what they teach. Watch yourself, too. What is your main purpose? Is being a Christian something you just try to work into your schedule while your primary concerns are your family, friends, work, and play? Do you use the bible as a tool to serve your needs or is it a tool to do the work of God in your life and in the lives of others around you? Does the Holy Spirit tell you what to do or do you find yourself more often telling the Holy Spirit what you want? Those who make their own desires a priority above what God wants make a mockery of the gospel.
Father, help me keep you and your will as my number one priority in my life. I thank you for all the blessings you have provided for me, but do not let my focus get on those things. You must remain first in my life and then you will guide me in the order of everything else. And help me to beware of those teachers who would cause division among believers by not allowing you to be first in their own lives.
