Eight part devotion on this text – Part 1 – Our Father in heaven
“In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.” Matthew 6:9-13 NKJV
“Our Father in heaven”
My first attitude of prayer should be to recognize that I am addressing my prayer to a loving Father in heaven. Yes, he is perfect and I am not. Yes, I have left His side at times, but He waits for me in the same way the prodigal son’s loving father waits for him. I can come to him with all the good and bad in my life.
Things to remember about our loving Father when we pray that we learned from the parable of the prodigal son: 1) He is watching for us. 2) He has compassion on His child (that is us). 3) He restores our relationship with Him. 4) He gives us authority to speak in His name. 5) He restores joy. 6) He gives us fellowship with the family of God. And all of this simply by His grace is ours. We cannot and do not earn it. These are the gifts of a loving Father.
Father, I am so glad that you made a way for me to call you that. I am blessed that you listen even when I have messed up. You listen not as a judge, but instead a loving Father. Let me live in a way that I am a blessing and not a reproach on the rest of the family.
