Eight part devotion on this text – Part 8 – Summary
“In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.” Matthew 6:9-13 NKJV
The Lord did not give us a prayer to repeat. He said to pray “in this manner.” The first three reflect our attitude of who He is and our relation to Him. The next three are our petitions for us: daily provision, forgiveness both for us and by us, and avoiding sin either brought on by temptation or attack. Then we close it out with going back to worshiping Him and recognizing that it is all in His hands.
Effective prayer should reflect these attitudes as we pray:
A. Recognize God as a loving Father.
B. Acknowledge Him as a Holy God.
C. Submit to Him as King.
D. Depend on Him daily.
E. Repent of our sins and forgive those who have injured us.
F. Turn to God for victory over temptation.
G. Conclude with adoration of the only true God.
We should let these thoughts guide our attitudes as we pray
Father, let me always come to You with the right attitudes when I pray. Never let my words be just a ritual, but let it be a genuine conversation with a loving Father.
PS: I have an eight part, in depth, study called “Attitudes of Prayer” on the Lord’s model for prayer that I wrote years ago and have presented in churches.
